Cottage Chic Shared Guest Bathroom Makeover

To say that I am excited to share this project is an understatement. This bathroom had no theme and no personality, but today you will see a cottage chic guest bathroom makeover that was easy and inexpensive to pull off.

This bathroom is mainly our son’s, however, he has to share it when company comes to visit. When Logan was a baby, the tub was always filled with toys and the drawers just accumulated towels, washcloths, wipes, and odds & ends. Fast forward a couple of years, and once he started taking showers, all those bath toys were moved to the cabinet under the sink, along with a stockpile of toilet paper, hair products, cleaning wipes, and extra hand soap.

Decorating a Cottage Chic Guest Bathroom

Every time I am decluttering and organizing a room, I feel motivated to go a little further and make it complete by changing up the decorative accents. In order to make the decor guest friendly, but still a bit masculine for my soon to be 7-year-old son,  I started by replacing the old beige and gold shower curtain and rod, with a modern cottoned twill curtain from Tommy Hilfiger I found at my local TJ Maxx.

The white with navy blue ‘Independence stripes’ set the nautical mood. You can find touches of navy throughout the bathroom, without overpowering the cottage chic look. I replaced the shower curtain rod with a new chrome rod, with modern finials to match the chrome shower curtain hooks I already had.

We always had a messy spread of bathroom products sitting in the tub’s corners. A shower basket solved that problem easily. I did run into a small issue here and that was that the suction cups do not adhere to the porous tile. I decided to attach it to the tub walls and it works just as fine. The suction cups are strong, and the basket is made of stainless steel which means, it won’t rust with time.

A matching bath mat in navy adds a pop of color to the light floors and cabinets. I also took an underused shabby chic basket and changed the pink roses ribbon for a navy ribbon.

A fresh coat of paint and a few scuff marks with a palm sander turned the boring brown cabinet above the toilet into a shabby chic piece. I decided to remove the corner pieces to give the cabinet a more streamlined look. One-of-kind cottage style pieces from around my home replace the babyish knick-knacks on the shelves.

On top of the cabinet, I finally found a place to display my stash of seashells I collected from our trip to Saint George Island last summer.

I also collect jars with cork tops (from Olde Thompson company), and inspired by my own Footprints in The Sand project, I recreated the ‘message in a bottle’ design but in a larger scale.

A small faux succulent, adds a touch of green to the shelf. To give a playful and kid-friendly touch, I added a small wooden boat from our son’s collection and a few coral rocks from our trip to Cat Island.

The wall where the window is, seemed boring and since painting the bathroom walls was not in my plans, I decided to add a pop of color by hanging a navy blue bath towel on a hook. Above the block glass window, hangs a small shadow box I took from the master bathroom.

Two nautical themed books sit on top of the toilet completed with a small garden basket which holds flushable wipes and another faux succulent.

Over the counter, a new set of white ceramic bathroom accessories in a honeycomb pattern, add glam and simplicity at the same time.

I took a wooden caddy I had purchased on clearance at my local Michaels last week and created a guest friendly toiletries station with bath salts, soap bars, body lotion, and washcloths.

Three medium size baskets help contain a number of products and towels. These baskets are made of steel wire and perforated sheet metal which creates a beautiful rustic and vintage look. They are very sturdy and since the stainless steel will resist rust.

Any guest can easily find extra bath towels, toilet paper, and a basket with bathroom cleaning necessities such as wipes, toilet brush refills, and air deodorizer.

My favorite product is the over the cabinet towel bar which it was much needed since the actual towel bar is hiding behind the door and a little out of reach. That same towel bar has a basket on the other side where I placed some hair products, shower gel, and extra hand soap. A very practical an easy way to add extra storage to any cabinet.

The top drawer is carefully organized with a practical acrylic tray which holds things such as first aid items, nail clippers, thermometer, cotton swabs, etc.

Lastly, two scoop trays help me organize the drawers by separating items and keeping them confined in a rather wide space. These hold some extra hand towels, and a collection of Coastal Living magazines.

Because a cottage chic guest bathroom would not be complete without a stash of magazines with beautiful pictures of the sun, the sand, and the sea.

I received free organization products from Spectrum Diversified which inspired this bathroom makeover. However, I only purchased a new set of towels, shower curtains, shower rod, and a bath mat. This helped me keep the expenses low. Everything else is repurposed items and decor I found around my home.
