How to Choose Candle Scents to Match Your Mood

Candles are a beautiful, and inexpensive way to decorate a home. But, have you ever stopped to think about the mood you want to set when choosing a scent or do you just buy them impulsively? Lately, I have been trying to be more mindful with my purchases. Considering I live on a constant cleaning and decluttering spree, I even try to choose my decorative candles with purpose. Here are my tips on how to choose the appropriate candle scents to match your mood.

Scents and fragrances are a powerful thing. I am positive that it has happened to you before: you smell a perfume you have used -or smelled – in the past, and your mind wanders back in time. And depending on the circumstances, your state of mind can be a happy one, or a sad one, or just plain nostalgic. Fragrances are powerful like that.

Candle scents are no different. Therefore, when choosing a candle to decorate your home, you should also think about how the scent you choose can influence your state of mind and your regular daily activities.

Chesapeake Bay Candle carefully selected and sent me 4 fragrances from their Home Scents Collection, a classic everyday candle assortment of fragrance favorites. Each candle is proudly Made in the USA, in Maryland, with an original blend of ingredients from around the world.

Here is how I decided to pair these wonderful fragrances with the right daily activity, to help me set the perfect mood for each occasion.

1. Focus and Concentration

Focus and concentration are one of the things I struggle the most with daily. With the information overload that surrounds me, I can get distracted easily, and lose my train of thought, especially when I am writing.

As much as I enjoy my studio, I find it very difficult to focus and write when sitting there. There are 3 computers, crafting tools, 2 printers, cutting machines, and a three-tier tray of papers that needs to be sorted out constantly.

So most of the time, instead, I choose to sit down in my living room by the window on quiet Sunday mornings. To match the mood, I light up a Sea Salt Vanilla candle. This candle is sweet and salty, and it definitely isn’t your average vanilla scent. There are subtle notes of ocean air that remind me of quiet, peaceful mornings at the beach house in Saint George Island.

2. Cleaning and Organization

To me, taking care of my home is a lifestyle more than it is a chore. I get to live and write about housekeeping, decluttering, and organization, so it’s no surprise that I enjoy most of the tasks that involve getting my home tidy.

In our home, at any given time, there are always either dirty dishes in the sink or clean ones inside the dishwasher waiting to be put away. The washer and dryer are constantly running, and I always seem to be folding clothes, pool towels, dish towels, placemats, and tablecloths. And I must say, I enjoy the aroma of fresh, clean, warm, folded laundry.

When I lit Snuggly Sweater, my mind wandered to laundry days.  The notes of lavender and rose are comforting while a base of white amber, vanilla, and musk carry the smell of clean clothes beyond the laundry room.

3. Relax and Recharge

Just a few minutes in a bathtub filled with warm water and bath salts are enough to help you relax and recharge after a long day. And what is a spa-like experience bath without the relaxing effect of candlelight?

I recently redecorated the guest bathroom and turned the boring room into a shabby chic cottage retreat. Between the few changes and add-ons, my most favorite part is the spa kit I prepared for guests. I took a simple wooden tool caddy and added bath salts, lavender scented soap bars, washcloths, magazines, and body lotion.

To complement the decor, I added the rich and creamy essence of the exotic Tahitian Vanilla candle. The subtle mix of fruits, flowers, and woods, tie it all together for a relaxing and recharging experience, for any guest.

4. Coffee or Tea Time

I can’t find anything more uplifting and comforting than the scent of freshly brewed coffee and baked goodies. Maybe that’s why I enjoy my coffee break so much. If you know me by now, you know that I don’t skip my coffee time, morning or afternoon.

Whenever I find the time to make that coffee break a little longer, I like to have a few cookies or a piece of coffee cake, while reading a book or a magazine. Better yet, sometimes I invite a friend or two over to just chat and try to fix the world.

The scent of Caramel Latte is the perfect addition to this occasion. The blend of warm nutmeg, spicy cinnamon, vanilla, and brown sugar, evokes the scent of delicious treats, offering instant comfort. It reminds me of fall, my most favorite season of the year.

Candles are a decorative element that has evolved in time. There’s no need to wait for the dark to light them up. Make them an essential part of your daily activities, to help you set the perfect mood.

All candles from the Home Scents Collection from Chesapeake Bay Candle, are poured in a clear glass cylinder jar with a silver metallic lid that adds a contemporary design to them. With 80 hours of burn time (19 oz candles), and lead-free cotton wicks, there’s a lot to love about them. And there’s plenty of more scents to experience from this collection.
