Making over this family room has been a dream of mine for the last three years, at least! You know life gets in the way, we give priority to other things, and renovation plans always seem to fall through the cracks.
But this time, I didn’t let this opportunity pass. If there is a job I am always up for, that would be painting. People say I am crazy, but what can I say? I love to paint! It’s hard to explain. I’ll say I get this feeling of renewal and “the satisfaction of a job well done” almost instantly after the first few brush strokes go over the wall.
And this project was no exception. Having the opportunity to work with one of my favorite brands had me as happy as a bird with a french fry. In other words, what else could I ask for? You will see.

How Our Family Room Looked Like Before
This room was begging for some love. Ten years ago these walls were all white and bland, so we decided to ‘add some pizzazz’ and painted them in a cappuccino-like shade of brown.

Not happy with that, we added a brown faux fireplace, brown rug, brown coffee table, brown wall unit along with tan leather couches. This room couldn’t be browner, or more boring for that matter. But brown and all, it has served great purposes. We have watched 10 years of TV on these leather couches, and our son has used it as a playroom ever since I can remember.

The cherry chest has seen better days, but it hides more hot wheel tracks than you can count, and it will stay put until I find the perfect replacement or pass the hot wheels stage, whichever comes first. My most recent acquisition is a tan cubby organizer to hide…you guessed it: more hot wheels cars than you can count, and some trains, too.

I have always been happy with the configuration of this family room. This area was the perfect playroom. Whenever our son and friends wanted to build tracks and play with toys, this open space was perfect.
And I say ‘wanted’ and ‘was’ because those days are probably over. We have 3 video game consoles, iPads, and wanna-be YouTubers in this house. With that said, the couch and the TV have been taken over by a 7-year-old and his friends.
UPDATE: Check out this same room turned into a Video Game Room in 2022.
Our Family Room Makeover with HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams Paint
Nothing freshens up and updates a room in just a day like a fresh coat of paint. For this family room makeover, I had the opportunity to choose my favorite paint color from a wide selection. I chose a color from the 2018 Color Collections of the Year by HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams using the INFINITY Interior Paint and Primer.
I didn’t want to be so predictable but yes, I picked a beautiful shade of gray. As a matter of fact, the name is absolutely unforgettable: Grayish (HGSW2447). This is a color from the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams Thoughtful Living 2018 Color Collection of the Year.

With four on-trend Color Collections of the Year from HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams, it’s easier than ever to bring harmony to your home. Each Color Collection has a range of colors that go together in any combination, helping take the guesswork out of choosing a color and giving your home a sense of room-to-room harmony. All you have to do is choose the designer-inspired look you want to achieve from themes like Next Journey, Future Thinker, Thoughtful Living or Individual Mix.
I couldn’t be happier with the Color Collection I chose: Thoughtful Living. This is exactly what I am for, thoughtful living. It is written all over my blog.

I enjoyed working on this project like I haven’t enjoyed a project in a while. Even if that meant washing my hands over and over again to answer the phone, or preparing meals and snacks in between brush strokes. My ugly hands and fingernails look better covered in paint anyway.

I feel this instant magic sense of renewal that I can’t quite explain. It’s probably the excitement of looking at my home and seeing nothing but ‘perfection.’ Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
This painting job was a breeze. It took me two full days to complete, which is record time in my book. The HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY Interior Paint and Primer is such a time saver. I was impressed how the ugly brown disappeared right before my eyes with the first strokes. The paint is thick, something I loved because there was barely any dripping.

For this project, I used Purdy brushes and rollers and I am very happy with their performance.

The angled brush gave me flawless results which I am very thankful for because I must confess: I barely used the painter’s tape.

HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams paint made it so easy for me to achieve the look of a perfectly designed home. My family and friends came over and were in ‘awe’ with the drastic (and beautiful) change.
Take it from me: when you paint your home using these Color Collections, you’re going to want to reveal your home like HGTV designers do. I totally felt like one.
The Big Reveal of our Family Room Makeover
So, have you’ve been scrolling to see the ‘after’ pictures? Well, here they are! And I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Maybe…

It’s bright and airy! I added new pillows to refresh this old leather couch.

There’s new artwork above the fireplace and above the cubby, as well as a table lamp to replace the outdated floor lamp.

I looked for hues in the artwork and other pieces, similar to the ones in the Color Collection, and I think I was able to achieve that coordinated look that designers do.

Now the brown furniture doesn’t look so brown and boring, right? It actually gained new life with the Grayish (HGSW2447) paint, a color from the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams Thoughtful Living Color Collection in the background. I am telling you guys, I am elated with this family room makeover.

I even added a brown throw. Who would’ve thought?

My talented husband, bless his heart, on top of all the work he had during the holiday season, I gave him the extra job to build these floating shelves for me. I would have made them, but I was busy painting these beautiful walls. 😉

I guess you can tell by now that this family room makeover made me the happiest girl on the blog block!
