10 Great Reasons To Be Organized

There is something we can all agree on; we all strive for a more organized life. If you are looking for reasons to be an organized person, read on. In this post, I compiled important reasons why you should be an organized person, highlighting the benefits and importance in ten easy-to-digest parts.

Why Is Organization So Important?

In the past couple of years, I have dedicated most of my time to developing habits and systems that can help me be and stay organized at home and manage my time better. Simple things like setting three daily goals, or meal planning, have a significant impact on your life. Decluttering, cleaning, and organizing have become my lifestyle. Here is why being an organized person is important and how it can benefit your entire life.

1. Organizing Clears Your Mind

I believe that the first reason why you should be organized is that organizing clears your mind. Whenever I am decluttering and organizing, I instantly feel renewed. There is something about the process of sorting, tossing, and cleaning that brings me peace and reduces my stress.

Making room in drawers and shelves helps clear your mind too. Maybe you will find something you’ve been looking for, which will bring you joy, or perhaps it will help you in a current situation.

2. Being Organized Saves You Time and Money

Simple organization projects, such as creating an organized junk drawer, helps you reduce the time spent looking for misplaced items, such as keys or sunglasses. No more running around looking for things. Likewise, you can recognize your priorities when you write things down and plan.

Another system that has never failed me is meal planning. My weeks run smoother when I plan our dinners in advance. No more guessing what’s for dinner at 5 p.m. If you organize and plan your meals, there is no reason to put yourself in that situation! Avoid going to the drive through, or those last minute shopping trips to the grocery store that make you spend extra money on unnecessary things.

3. Being Organized Gives You Flexibility

Here’s another great reason to be organized: it makes your schedule more flexible! When you’re an organized person and know how to manage your time, you are more flexible. You will find an opening in your day for unscheduled situations, even for an impromptu cup of coffee with a friend.

Being organized does not mean you have to be rigid and stick to a schedule religiously. There’s no reason for that. It is quite the opposite. When you organize your tasks, plan your meals, or plan your laundry day, you can spend time doing other unscheduled things and still have your life under control.

A healthy routine example is to use the time-blocking method to organize the schedule and make room for what is important.

4. Organizing Sparks Your Creativity

My organization projects always inspire me to DIY. Whether you are cleaning a bathroom cabinet or looking for a way to get the kid’s toys under control, there’s always an ‘aha moment’ that sparks creativity.

When I couldn’t find a way to neatly organize all my home decor and seasonal items inside the powder room closet, I created these wood covers for wire shelving. This project is -to date- one of the best improvements I’ve made to my home.

I also made these custom drawer dividers for my kitchen utensils!

5. When You are Organized, You Set an Example

We all battle with our kids and spouses, asking them to put things back where they belong. But do these things have a ‘home’? If items don’t have a designated storage area, we can’t expect others not to leave them scattered around the house.

Decluttering, cleaning, and organizing, have become my lifestyle. Here are my top 10 reasons why you should be organized, too.

Lead by example and commit yourself to be an organized person. Create zones where you can put things away (e.g., backpacks, electronics, shoes, sports gear, toys). By doing this, you are setting an example for the people around you.

6. Organizing is Contagious

Along the same lines of leading by example, here’s my sixth reason why I love being organized! Organizing is contagious, and it spreads like fire. My mom, sister, friends, and neighbors all praise my organizing methods. They ask me to help them organize their homes and teach them tips to keep things in order.

In our nature, we all strive to be organized people, but not all people can manage because they don’t know where to start.

Start somewhere. Once you pick up the first paper off the kitchen counter and look for a folder where to file it in your office, you will gain momentum. It’s like a chain reaction. It will make you create a system to organize your paperwork.

7. Organizing and Decluttering Promotes Charity

Every time you declutter, you are not only helping yourself, but you are also helping others. By giving away, donating to charity, and passing things down to friends and family, you become an organized person with good reason! And there is nothing more significant than helping others. You don’t need to do a full-blown decluttering session to pick out things for charity.

Young kids, for example, grow out of their clothes and shoes quickly, so it will only take 15 minutes to sort through the closet, drop the items in a bag or a box, and pass them on. Likewise, spend 15 minutes sifting through your pantry and donating those snacks that you bought for your children to find out ‘they didn’t like them’ and give them to your local church or food bank. Always check expiration or best-by dates.

8. Organizing Increases Your Self-Esteem

Feeling accomplished is a great feeling. Having the kid’s school clothes ready the night before, serving a healthy meal to your family, finishing homework, and paying bills on time are only a few examples. When done right and promptly, these are things that boost your esteem and make you feel proud of your efforts.

Take some time to write down a list, identify your priorities, make a plan, and execute it.

9. Organizing Makes You Love Your Home

You can dust or vacuum faster when you don’t have to pick things off the floor or shuffle papers to clean a counter. Your house will look and stay clean for longer periods.

Decluttering your home, donating to charity, and organizing the things you love, allow you to identify areas you need to improve in your home. So, treat yourself and purchase a new basket to sort your laundry or a new shelf to display your favorite books. Breathe calmness and serenity by walking into your organized and uncluttered home.

10. Enhances Family Relationships

Finally, this is my favorite reason to be organized: you become a better person. With a flexible schedule, you will find more time for your family, and with reduced stress, you will have a better relationship with others.

Your family will adapt to the new habits because you are leading them by example. When everyone in the household is on the same page, following an established routine, the family relationship improves. Spend less time asking your loved ones to pick up and put away things and more time doing things that matter.

How has your lifestyle improved by being organized?

  1. Great article! It is all true ! Everytime I can clean and organized a closet or a desk makes me feel in heaven.

  2. Great post Flavia! Feeling a sense of accomplishment and building self-esteem are not always things I think about when trying to get more organized. Getting healthier on an emotional and psychological level is a valuable motivation – not just getting more things done! Thanks for this. So, so valuable 🙂

    1. Thank you, Jelica. It’s true. I realize that my happiest days are the ones when I have little or big accomplishments. Little as in “bathroom is clean!” and big as in “publishing the perfect (to me) blog post” – It all lays on the foundation of organization. XO
