Organizing with Smart Labels

I received free products from Bluelounge in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Nothing is more frustrating than going out of the way to reach and open a box or a basket in the closet, attic, or garage, just to find out that, what you’ve been looking for isn’t there. But, those days are over. There is a great tool to facilitate easy access to your stuff! So, stop wondering where your stuff is, and start organizing with smart labels.

Beautifully organized spaces have one thing in common: concealment. Whether you use baskets, boxes, or drawers, to store your stuff, when things are categorized, confined, and concealed, the room looks neat and clean. But with concealment, also comes a little downfall: how to identify the contents. Unless you make pretty labels (like the ones I designed for bathroom organization), you’re going to have a hard time finding your stuff.

Last summer, I made one of my favorite organization projects to date. Not only I decluttered and organized a horrendous closet, but I also updated it by making wood covers for the wire shelving. The result was flawless! One year later, the closet looks exactly the same. Even though we access the closet several times a day, everything stays in place, neat and organized. Thanks to those baskets.

But also, a year later, I can not remember what I stored in the top shelves, inside the 3 ‘storage’ baskets. So, when Bluelounge asked me if I was willing to review a sample of their product Quick Peek™, I did not hesitate to say a big YES!

Quick Peek™ is a storage solution that uses smart labels and a free iOS app to store your things with images, like a catalog. This is perfect for people who are moving, or for families that own a storage unit full of boxes, and it is particularly useful for those like me, who love organization and strive for neat spaces.

How to Use Quick Peek™ Smart Labels

Quick Peek™ has many uses, from storing memorabilia to cataloging insurance or tax documents or organizing seasonal items like I did.  The labels can be used to store almost everything, as long as you can take a picture of the item.

I received a package of 32 self-adhesive smart labels. The package contains 8 sheets with 4 labels each. Each label is numbered and it has its own code that works exclusively with the free Quick Peek™ iOs app.

In a nutshell, here is how it works:

  1. Download the free Quick Peek™ iOS app
  2. Place a sticker in the front of your box, basket, or any container you are using for storage
  3. In the app, create a ‘New Box’, assign a sticker to it, and give the box (or any other container) a name.
  4. Take pictures of the items that will go inside the box
  5. Give each picture a name, quantity, and small description
  6. Save.

Next time you are in front of your box, just scan the sticker, and the contents of the box will show up in a catalog-like list. There’s no need to open the box, not even the need to pull a step ladder. If it is within arm’s reach, the unique real-time scanning function lets you wave your phone over the smart labels to see the exact contents.

A Quick Peek at My ‘Seasonal Items’ Basket

As I mentioned before, the labels are peel and stick. So, if you’re storing items inside a box, or a plastic container, you just have to stick them on the front of it.

Since my baskets have an oval shape and they’re made of fabric, I went the extra mile (because, why not?) and I made my own hang tags for my labels. If that makes sense!

But you DO NOT have to do this! You definitely don’t. This is just how I operate (sigh).

I took this extra step so I could hang the tags from the baskets’ handles.

After this, I picked one basket, emptied it out, and I hung tag B002 on its handle. On the app, I clicked on ‘Add a new box’, and the scanner opened for me to assign a label to that box, a name, and a location.

I named my basket ‘Seasonal 1’ and I added the new location ‘Powder Room Closet’. The app comes pre-loaded with Attic, Garage, and Self Storage, but you can add your own location.

After that, I started taking pictures of each of the items. Some of them I grouped (like the 3 gold candles in the picture below) since the app allows you to add not only name, but also quantity, and notes about the item(s).

I like being able to write notes for each item. Since knick knacks like these don’t really have a name, you need a full description that can help you find it easy in the search box within the app. So for these candles, for example, I wrote the note:  ‘Christmas Crystal candleholders’, and for a set of 3 candleholders, I wrote the note: ‘Present from Mom’.

After taking pictures of all my vases, seasonal candles, candle holders, etc., my catalog looked like the screenshot below.

I did the same process with every item stored in the other two baskets and assigned labels to them. From now on, it will be easier for me to find exactly what I need, when I need it, without having to go on a scavenger hunt.

My Honest Review

Although the process of taking pictures of each item, and typing all the information could be tedious for some, I think this is a fantastic system for those who like to stay organized and have a better control of their possessions. The labels are affordable ($9.95 for 32 labels), and the app is free to download and use.

This is definitely a great system for my Christmas decorations, too. On January of 2016, I labeled every bin with generic names, but I still had to add extra info such as ‘manger, figurines, tree skirt, etc.’ So, one label had more than one item listed on it. With these smart labels, I can have better control of each box and its contents.

I am looking forward to organizing with smart labels my holiday decorations this coming fall! Yes, I said that, and I mean it!

What do you look forward to organizing with smart labels?
